The most fun part of Bannerlord to me is being a mercenary and it's a very viable way to make a bunch of money. Vlandia gets the faction bonus for making even more money with mercenary contracts so most of the time I choose Vlandia because it lets you have such a good mid game before you start your own faction.
In order to become a vassal in Mount & Blade II Bannerlord, you must first become a mercenary of a kingdom. This is pretty easy to do, go find a lord in a castle and ask to join them as a mercenary. I just need to get started with my first fief. I remember from back when I first played it, becoming a vassal can get you shafted quite a lot so I thought going for
maybe you're not gud enought for them. Now track them down and kill them all. The whole "leaving kingdom" thing is total sh*t. Lords are changing clans faster than their underwear. The way to go atm is to just chop heads all day. I've noticed that some clans will leave you no matter what.
Apr 4, 2020. #1. When leaving a kingdom as a mercenary we currently get -20 Penalty with ALL lords of that faction. You are only a mercenary you shouldn't be losing this much relations, maybe lose -5 or -10 with THAT specific lord that you signed up with to be a mercenary. Right now this is very exaggerated and I would like for it to be amended

Grandmaster Knight. Oct 21, 2008. #6. You can use it though. Go to the king and join as a vassal - this negates your mercenary contract. And now revoke your oath. To do this you need enough reknown (to join as a vassal) and the king will like you less.
You can improve relations with lords and that's supposed to give you better chances of lords nominating you for fiefs. Later while gaining more influence you can nominate yourself and have a chance to get some fiefs. Being mercenary sucks in term of kingdom mechanics. You are constantly losing influence.
At first, there was a penalty. A few patches in, they removed it. People wanted to be able to hop around merc'ing for different factions. I don't think it's a bad moveinitially being a merc was about as restrictive as being a vassal (as far as relations penalty for leaving faction), without the benefits.
